Spires are considered integral parts of the architectural design of buildings, to which changes would substantially change the appearance and design of the building, whereas antennas may be added or removed without such consequences. This naturally hurts the rankings of buildings without spires, or with antennas instead of spires, or with shorter spires. The most famous such discrepancy is that Petronas Towers, with their spires, are ranked higher than the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) with its antennas, despite the Petronas Towers’ lower roofs and lower highest points (of spire/antenna). The following ranking is based purely on architectural detail and antenna/spire has not been taken into consideration. Please also note that the Petronas twin towers have been considered here as two different buildings with both having the same specfications and statistics.
